Quick answer
We rank licensed rehab centers on accreditation, levels of care, payment options and how complete their licensing data is. Featured or paid placements never affect a facility's rank.
Every “best rehab centers” list on StartDrugRehab.com is built from the same published formula and the same public data. This page explains what goes into a ranking, what does not, and the limits you should keep in mind.
Where the data comes from
Listings come from SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov, the federal locator for state-licensed substance use treatment facilities. In California we also use the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) licensing records. Facilities report their own services, payment options and accreditation to these programs, and we refresh the data regularly.
What we score
- Accreditation (up to 8 points). Joint Commission or CARF accreditation earns 6 points, both earn 7, and COA or NCQA accreditation adds 1. Accreditation means an independent body has reviewed the program’s safety and quality standards.
- Levels of care (up to 10.5 points). 1.5 points each for detox, residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient care, plus 1 point each for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and dual diagnosis care and 0.5 each for hospital inpatient and telehealth. Programs that offer more of the continuum make it easier to step down without changing providers.
- Payment options (up to 6 points). Private insurance 2, Medicaid 1, Medicare 1, TRICARE 1, self-pay 0.5 and sliding-scale fees 0.5.
- Listing completeness (up to about 9.5 points). Half of our listing-quality score, which rewards a published website and phone number, documented therapies and treatment approaches, languages, age groups served and special programs.
Facilities are sorted by total score, with ties broken alphabetically.
Rules that keep lists useful
- Listings with too little information to evaluate are not ranked.
- General rehab lists include only facilities that offer at least one treatment level, so sober living homes are not ranked as rehabs.
- One location per operator per list, so a single chain can’t fill a top 10.
- On state lists, no more than two facilities from the same city. On national lists, no more than two from the same state.
- A list is shown only when at least three facilities qualify.
What never affects rank
Rankings are calculated from listing data only. Featured placements, claimed listings and any payment to StartDrugRehab.com have no effect on a facility’s rank. Featured listings appear in a separate, labeled “Featured” section, never inside a ranked list.
Limits you should know about
- We do not measure clinical outcomes, and we do not use patient reviews or star ratings.
- Services and payment options are reported by facilities and may change. Always confirm insurance, availability and licensing directly with a program before admission.
- A ranking is a starting point for comparison, not an endorsement or medical advice. The right program depends on your substance use, health, location and coverage.
- National lists only include facilities in the states we currently cover.
Corrections
If a facility’s details are wrong, the facility can claim its listing to update them, or anyone can contact us through the site. Updated information is reflected in the next ranking refresh. Read more in our editorial policy.
Frequently asked questions
Do facilities pay to be ranked?
No. Rankings use listing data only. Featured and claimed listings are shown separately and labeled, and payment never changes a facility's position in a ranked list.
Why isn't a well-known rehab in the top 10?
Rankings reflect the services, payment options and accreditation each facility reports to SAMHSA and state licensing programs. If a program's data is incomplete or out of date, it may rank lower. The facility can claim its listing to correct it.
How often are rankings updated?
Rankings refresh automatically at least once a day, using the latest listing data.
