What to look for in an alcohol rehab
- Medical detox. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. Heavy, daily drinkers should start with supervised detox rather than quitting alone.
- Medications for alcohol use disorder. Naltrexone, acamprosate and disulfiram are FDA-approved and can reduce relapse. Ask whether a program prescribes them.
- Dual diagnosis care. Depression and anxiety often occur alongside alcohol use disorder. Programs that treat both tend to see better results.
- A plan after discharge. Outpatient care, support groups and sober living help people stay sober after residential treatment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best treatment for alcohol addiction?
Most people do best with medically supervised detox followed by residential or intensive outpatient treatment that combines behavioral therapy with FDA-approved medications such as naltrexone or acamprosate.
How long is alcohol rehab?
Detox usually takes 3 to 7 days. Residential programs commonly run 28 to 90 days, followed by outpatient care. Length depends on clinical need and insurance authorization.
Does insurance cover alcohol rehab?
Most private plans, Medicaid and Medicare cover medically necessary alcohol treatment. What you pay depends on your plan's network, so verify benefits before admission.
