How Long Does Xanax Stay in Your System?

Quick answer

Xanax is usually detectable in urine for about 1–4 days after occasional use and up to about 1–2 weeks with regular use. It shows up in blood for about 1–2 days and in hair for up to about 90 days. Some benzodiazepine screens can miss it.

About 1–4 days

Many benzodiazepine screens are designed around other benzos and can miss alprazolam unless the lab uses a sensitive method.

What the test looks for
Alpha-hydroxyalprazolam (the main metabolite)
On standard drug tests?
Not on the 5-panel. Many 10-panel tests include benzodiazepines, but common screens can miss Xanax — it depends on the test.
How fast it clears
About 11 hours on average (range 6–27 hours); longer in older adults and people with liver disease.

Estimates, not a guarantee. Dose, how often and how long someone has used, body fat, hydration, metabolism and the lab’s cutoff all change the window. No calculator can tell you how a specific test will come out.

How long does Xanax stay in your urine?

Urine tests look for alpha-hydroxyalprazolam, the main breakdown product of alprazolam.

Xanax half-life

According to the FDA label, alprazolam has an average half-life of about 11 hours in healthy adults, ranging from about 6 to 27 hours. It is longer in older adults and in people with liver disease or obesity. Xanax XR releases the drug more slowly but has a similar half-life.

Does Xanax show up on a drug test?

Not on a basic 5-panel test. Many 10-panel and extended tests include benzodiazepines, but standard benzo screens were designed around drugs that break down into oxazepam, and alprazolam does not. Depending on the lab and its method, Xanax can be missed, especially at prescribed doses. Labs that use more sensitive methods or confirmation testing detect it more reliably.

How long does Xanax stay in your blood, saliva and hair?

Alprazolam is generally found in blood for up to about 1–2 days, and longer with regular use. It reaches very low levels in saliva, so saliva tests often miss it. Hair tests can detect benzodiazepine use over about the past 90 days.

What affects how long Xanax stays in your system?

  • How much and how often. A single use clears far faster than daily or heavy use, which can build up in the body.
  • The test and its cutoff. Every test has a cutoff level. Labs using lower cutoffs or more sensitive methods (like LC-MS/MS) can detect use for longer.
  • Metabolism, age and health. Liver and kidney function, age, genetics and other medications change how fast a drug is broken down.
  • Body fat and hydration. Fat-soluble drugs linger longer in people with more body fat. Diluted urine can lower concentrations, and labs check for dilution.

Never stop Xanax suddenly after regular use

If you have taken Xanax daily for weeks or longer, stopping all at once can cause severe withdrawal, including seizures. A doctor can taper the dose slowly, or a medical detox program can manage withdrawal safely. Mixing Xanax with opioids or alcohol greatly raises the risk of overdose.

When a drug test is the least of your worries

If you are looking this up because you are worried about an upcoming test, it may be worth asking a bigger question: is your use starting to cost you something, such as your job, your health, money or relationships? Needing to plan around a drug test is itself a sign some people use to decide it is time for help.

Treatment is more flexible than most people expect. Outpatient programs let you keep working, and many plans cover rehab under federal parity rules. You can get matched with up to 3 programs in about a minute, browse rehab centers by state, or call the number on this page to talk it through. It is free and confidential.
