Quick answer
Luxury sober living homes are upscale, substance-free recovery residences that offer private or semi-private rooms, high-end furnishings, structure and peer support after treatment. They are housing, not treatment, and are usually paid privately. Choose a home certified by a NARR state affiliate or state program, and avoid any home that offers free rent or steers you to a specific provider.
What is luxury sober living?
A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is a shared alcohol- and drug-free home where people in recovery support one another. Luxury sober homes offer the same structure in a more comfortable setting. Many people move in after luxury rehab or another residential program, when they’re stable but not yet ready to return to their old environment.
Luxury sober living is a bridge. It gives you time to practice recovery skills, attend outpatient treatment and rebuild routines with accountability around you.

What do luxury sober homes typically offer?
Features vary widely, but luxury sober homes commonly offer:
- Private or semi-private bedrooms in upscale homes or neighborhoods
- Housekeeping, and sometimes chef-prepared or catered meals
- On-site house managers or staff around the clock
- Recovery coaching, life-skills support and help with work or school
- Fitness memberships, yoga or wellness activities
- Transportation to outpatient treatment and meetings
- Regular drug and alcohol testing
Amenities aren’t standardized, and they aren’t a substitute for clinical care. Confirm what’s included in writing.
| Feature | Standard sober living | Luxury sober living |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms | Usually shared | Often private or semi-private |
| Staffing | Peer-run or a house manager | Often staff on site around the clock |
| Services | House rules and meetings | Often recovery coaching, transportation and wellness |
| Location | Varies | Often upscale neighborhoods or coastal areas |
| Cost | Lower monthly rent | Much higher monthly rent |
| Treatment | Not provided on site | Usually not provided on site; residents attend outside programs |
How do NARR levels and certification work?
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) sets national standards for recovery homes and describes four levels of support:
| NARR level | Name | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Level I | Peer-run | Resident-governed, no paid staff |
| Level II | Monitored | A paid house manager, house rules and drug testing |
| Level III | Supervised | Paid staff, structured schedules and life-skills support |
| Level IV | Service provider | Run by a licensed provider with clinical services |
Most luxury sober homes operate at Level II or Level III. NARR doesn’t certify homes itself. State affiliate organizations inspect and certify homes that meet the standard.
Certification warnings
- “Luxury” isn’t a credential. A beautiful home tells you nothing about safety or ethics. Ask for proof of certification from your state’s NARR affiliate or state program.
- Rules differ by state. Arizona requires sober living homes to be licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services, and those homes may not provide medical or clinical services on site. In Florida, state law bars licensed treatment providers from referring patients to recovery residences that aren’t certified. Many other states have voluntary certification. You can browse options in Arizona and Florida.
- Clinical services need a treatment license. If a home offers therapy or medical care, it should be licensed as a treatment provider. An unlicensed home marketed as “luxury rehab” is a red flag.
What red flags should you watch for?
Some homes exploit families who want the best for a loved one. Be cautious if a home:
- Offers free rent, free flights, cash or gifts for moving in
- Requires you to attend a specific treatment program or lab
- Bills your insurance for frequent, expensive drug tests
- Has no written lease, house rules or receipts
- Won’t share its certification status
- Discourages contact with family
Paying or receiving kickbacks for referrals to recovery homes, treatment facilities or labs is a federal crime under the Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act (EKRA), and many states have their own patient brokering laws.
Is luxury sober living safe?
A well-run, certified home can be one of the safest places to be in early recovery. Ask about overdose preparedness. After a period without opioids, tolerance drops, and using your old amount can be fatal. Good homes keep naloxone on hand and train residents to use it. Ask about medication policies too, including whether residents taking medication-assisted treatment (MAT) are welcome.
Most homes require you to be medically stable. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be life-threatening, so complete medically supervised luxury detox first if you need it. If someone isn’t breathing or won’t wake up, call 911. If you or a housemate has thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.
How do you pay for luxury sober living?
Residents usually pay rent directly, often monthly with a deposit. Health insurance generally doesn’t cover rent, because housing isn’t a medical service. Insurance may cover the outpatient care you attend while living there, such as an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or partial hospitalization program (PHP). See luxury rehab cost for payment options and our main guide to sober living for more background.
How we select programs for this list
The programs listed below meet our private-pay residential standard. Each is privately operated, offers residential treatment, is accredited by The Joint Commission or CARF, and accepts private insurance or self-pay but not Medicaid, based on SAMHSA facility data. Many of these programs offer or refer to sober living, but amenities vary and aren’t verified by us, so confirm housing options and certification directly.
Choose a sober home that supports lasting recovery
The right luxury sober home combines comfort with certification, clear rules and a strong link to outpatient care. Review the programs below and ask every home for proof of certification. For help finding treatment to pair with sober living, call (877) 847-2855 to reach our admissions helpline. It’s free and confidential.
Frequently asked questions
What is luxury sober living?
Luxury sober living is an upscale recovery residence where people in early recovery live together in a substance-free home. Compared with standard sober homes, luxury homes often offer private rooms, better locations, more staff support and extra services. Like all sober homes, they provide housing and structure, not clinical treatment.
How much does luxury sober living cost?
Costs vary widely by location, room type and services. Luxury sober homes usually cost much more than standard sober living but far less than residential treatment. Ask what's included, such as meals, transportation, recovery coaching and drug testing.
Does insurance pay for luxury sober living?
Health insurance generally doesn't pay sober living rent, because housing isn't a medical service. Insurance may cover outpatient treatment you attend while living there, such as an intensive outpatient program.
What is NARR certification?
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) publishes national standards for recovery homes. State affiliate organizations inspect and certify homes that meet those standards. Certification is a strong sign of quality, but it's voluntary in many states.
Are luxury sober homes licensed?
It depends on the state. Many states don't license sober homes, while some, such as Arizona, require a state license. A sober home that provides clinical treatment on site generally needs a treatment license, so ask what the home is licensed for.
How long do people stay in luxury sober living?
There's usually no fixed length. Many residents stay several months, and some stay longer. The right length depends on your recovery goals and your readiness to return home.
